Webinar: An Hour with Simon Somogyi

Canadian Institute of Food Science and Technology and Food in Canada , Canada's food and beverage processing magazine, have partnered to deliver a webinar to CIFST members and stakeholders every Wednesday from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. EST.

Value chain management: a path to Canadian food innovation and lessons from around the globe

Food supply chains that turn into value chains can bring better efficiency, profitability, innovation and sustainability for all the members of those chains. In Dr Somogyi’s talk, he will discuss what makes a food value chain and how they differ from supply chains, giving a set of examples from his research around the globe on how the creation and modification of food value chains has brought benefits to business, community and government.

In lieu of a speaker's fee, CIFST will be making a donation to Food Banks Canada . The organization is  dedicated to helping Canadians living with food insecurity by supporting a network of Provincial Associations, affiliate food banks, and food agencies that work at the community level to relieve hunger. Their work is focused on maximizing collective impact, strengthening local capacity, and reducing the need for food banks.

Our Speaker:

Simon Somogyi - Arrell Chair in the Business of Food at the University of Guelph, Value Chain Management

Dr. Simon Somogyi is the Arrell Chair in the Business of Food and Director of the Longo's Food Retail Laboratory in the School of Hospitality, Food & Tourism Management and an Honorary Senior Fellow in Agribusiness in the School of Agriculture & Food Sciences, University of Queensland, Australia.

He has a PhD in Agribusiness Marketing from the University of Adelaide, Australia and he is a teacher and researcher in the area of agri-food value chain management and international market development.

Over the past decade he has led and contributed to research and development value chain projects in countries such as China, Japan, Australia, Pakistan, The Philippines, Indonesia, Kenya and Canada. Most of these projects involve creating and delivering consumer driven food supply chains, linking members of the chain from input supply and primary production to retail, particularly in the beverage, seafood and horticulture sectors. These projects generally result in more efficient food supply chains that create and deliver more food at a higher price point, with less waste, and with more profitability & economic sustainability for all members of the chain.

He has appeared in print, radio and TV media outlets such as The Globe & Mail, The Hill Times, Maclean's, CTV, CBC, Global News, Canadian Press, National Post and The Financial Post. He also provides consulting services to the private sector and federal and provincial Canadian governments and is active on Twitter as @SimonSomogyiAFI.
